Triad Startup Lab 2016 Spring Cohort: Week 5 Update
Collectively you pulled almost $21,000 in sales last week, seriously impressive. The best yet! A great week!
Congratulations to every one of you – for powering through the last weeks “MILESTONE-mania” workshop. Now you all have a solid direction and a plan for the next five weeks! See the attached 30-60 Day Action Plan.
Special kudos to Karen Niemczyk on completing and bringing in her first working prototype this morning! The lamp has some really cool capacitive touch switches and mini ardiuno circuit boards she designed built (see photos attached) The lamp runs on a sequenced computer program she has designed that connects thru a USB port on the lamp. Karen cast the lamp in polyurethane in a rubber mold and the base was cut at The Forge. Great job! Great progress! Onwards and upwards to bluetooth!
Workshop Meeting Agenda – Content
5:00PM – 6:45PM Thursday, March 31
We are very lucky to have Taylor Pipes joining us this week and presenting his view of content as a tool for achieving strategic goals. I love this summary and his deep understanding of this subject (from his linkedin page):
I believe content + design will play a huge role in reshaping the media landscape. With nearly ten years of journalism experience and a background in documentary, I approach content under a filmmaker’s lens and have the ability to execute on core journalistic skills. One of the narratives in my work is curating content and creating compelling, engaging stories across the web and social media. Most recently, I have been working to distill documents and publications into digestible bits of content that have an important place ranging from the web, mobile applications and social media. I am most interested in being a part of the convergence of mobile technology and editorial. I also have a deep interest and passion in exploring the intersection of travel with mobile and maintain a keen awareness to the growing vertical of contextual applications. Specialties: Content marketing, digital media, publishing, content, social media, blogging, writing, broadcast television, production, documentary film, print, radio.
(We will work on this together as a group Thursday night – so no advance preparation needed – just attend)
As agreed: our weekly meeting will be every Thursday evening at 5PM – Alex will have a group meal at collab for you at 4:30PM.

NEW – Extended office hours
I have added and increased instances of my office hours. If you would like to focus on a special project with me please review the schedule on the doodle here: LINK You have the option of taking TWO one hour slots per week. PLEASE cancel any slots you will not be using so others can fill in. If you get shut out – let me know and I will make the time for you.
Week 4 – My notes:
This is the best Triad Startup Lab cohort yet. Everyone of the founders is 110% committed to their startup. I am truly surprised by the progress they are making and the support they demonstrate toward each other. Collectively they help each other solve problems and make connections to increase sales and depth of strategies. I think the GrowthWheel platform has everyone staying focused. I completed three really good strategy boards in the past week: Encepheal, Catalant, and Well Groomed Data. NCGlider and Arts Carolina have begun work in earnest on advanced prototypes. I think I found a great mentor for fluffmonger and HomeHelpers needs some specialized attention (mentors?). Hops and Nuts has some realistic goals and Food Market has a perfect outcome now in mind (think Abby Donnelly) and SUDS is moving into some real customer development.
My personal challenge for this week: Identify mentors.
2016 TSL Spring Cohort meets weekly: every Thursday Night 5 PM – 630 PM at co//ab – I encourage all previous TSL grads to join us (except this week).
